The Progressive era gave rise to significant changes to the nations economic, political, and social sectors. Progressives were both men and women from different ethnic throngs, classifyes and occupations who challenged tralatitious attitudes about the American way of life. They fought to overcome problems in government, get off political machines and inadequate hold conditions of the poor. These writers believed that once the government and big businesses were reformed, leaders would be able to focus their efforts on protecting the weaker members of society, such as women, children, the sick, and the poor. Theodore Roosevelt labeled these journalists who exposed offensive and immoral doings as muckrakers. The muckrakers brought issues to the publics attention so that consummation could be taken to reform the problems.
